Wood identification

Anatomy of European and North American woods - an interactive identification key

Since summer 2000 I have been working on an interactive identification key for European and North American woods (both softwoods and hardwoods). My goal was and is to integrate the hardly manageable bulk of information gained from scores of wood-anatomical studies and to present them in a more user-friendly way.

The key is based on the DELTA format (DEscription Language for TAxonomy) and is currently available in English and German (one ZIP-archive per language). DELTA was developed by This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it et al., at CSIRO Entomology (Canberra, Australia).

For using my wood identification key you will not need the whole DELTA package, but an installed user interface like Intkey is the minimum requirement. Intkey as well as the complete software package can be downloaded at the DELTA Homepage. This is also where you can find general usage hints and the full documentation. Links to DELTA and to alternative software solutions can also be found at the site Digital Taxonomy (also available via my Links section).

After a successful installation of DELTA/Intkey and the decompression  of the key's ZIP file it can be launched via double-clicking the file "intkey.ink".

System requirements

DELTA Editor / Intkey
(from the DELTA doc file INSTALL.TXT)
  • "The programs run under Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0, and later versions of these systems, without any special requirements."
  • "The programs also run under Windows 95, provided that version 2 or later of Microsoft's 'rich-edit' control is available (riched20.dll in the Windows 'system' directory). This was not distributed with Windows 95, but will be present if you have installed MS Office 97 or later, MS Word 97 or later, or MS Word Viewer 97. The latter is available free of charge at http://www.microsoft.com/office/000/viewers.htm" (Anmerkung des Bearbeiters: dieser Link ist veraltet, die Webseite nicht mehr verfügbar)
  • "When installed, Intkey requires about 2MB of disk space, and the full DELTA System about 8MB."
